Never Never by Colleen Hoover and Tarryn Fisher: Book Summaries and Reviews

  • Genre: Young Adult contemporary romantic suspense/thriller
  • Age Rating: Young Adults aged 14 and over. The characters are in high school and, while sexually active, this book is more of a thriller than it is a romance novel.

Never Never (Part 1 of 3)

Never Never (Part 1) is the first of three books/parts in Never Never by Colleen Hoover and Tarryn Fisher.

Part 1 begins with two high school students, Charlize (Charlie) and Silas, having absolutely no memory at all — smack dab in the middle of their day in high school.

They begin to put some pieces together simply by interacting with various people: They learn that they are a couple, that their families seem to have some bad blood, and that they each have one sibling.

Part 1 mostly focuses on these two characters earnestly trying to figure out what happened to them, why it only happened to them and no one around them, how they can get answers, and how to go about their daily lives without seeming suspicious.

Notably, Silas finds a letter and begins to get some clues as to how the two should move forward in a world where everyone surrounding them knows them, yet he and Charlie don’t recognize a single soul or, more concerning, themselves.

Never Never (Part 2 of 3)

Part 2 of Never Never by Colleen Hoover and Tarryn Fisher begins with Silas and Charlie losing their memories all over again, thereby not knowing anyone they just interacted with in Part 1 and, quite eerily, not even knowing themselves.

We begin to see this book turn into more of a mystery/thriller in Part 2. Charlie is not only missing after a night out with Silas at the end of Part 1, but the chapters narrated by her are chilling as they depict her in an institutional setting, being fed unknown medications by a nurse of few words.

Silas, on the other hand, is on a mission to find Charlie while dealing with getting to know everyone around him for the second time since the book began.

What I found interesting about Part 2 is that the main characters are losing their memories for the second time, but the supporting characters are still in the current time. This means that to the other characters, Silas in particular appears mentally unstable. He forgets how to play football… twice. He forgets his name… twice. He’s meeting his younger brother… twice. To the outside world, however, this is just making Silas look more and more unhinged.

I enjoyed placing myself in the shoes of both Silas and the other characters to try to appreciate how perspective affects the way we think.

I’ll also note that the final moments of Part 2 are particularly gut-wrenching.

Never Never (Part 3 of 3)

Part 3 of Never Never by Colleen Hoover and Tarryn Fisher opens with a bit of an unexpected twist: Silas has not lost his memory this time. He has been reading love letters they’ve written one another throughout the entire story to learn about their relationship.

Unfortunately, Charlie has lost her memory for the third time.

They discover that in recent times, they have not been on the best of terms, but also that they’ve known one another since birth and their love runs deep.

The two become closer and being to learn how to fall in love with one another again, despite the differences they’ve had. In a way, losing their memories has brought them back to the core of who they are and what they want.

There is depth to this mystery as well. Silas and Charlie’s father previously worked together and there are some questions to be answered about the state of their current business relationship.

Additionally, a fellow student from school may have some unexpected ties to Charlie’s past that neither she nor Silas were expecting.

As the two sort through these difficult matters while simultaneously trying to sort through their feelings for one another, things become a bit clearer as to what their futures hold.

Perhaps because this story was largely written as one of Hoover’s earlier books, or perhaps because Tarryn Fisher co-wrote it, it should be noted that this is not a typical Colleen Hoover book. The fast-paced, spicy romance that made Hoover the viral sensation we know and love is not featured in this novel.

Part 3 certainly ties up the loose ends established for the reader in Part 1 and 2, but I also felt the ending was a bit anticlimactic. What had the potential to be a true thriller/mystery did not live up to the hype for me personally.

This may have something to do with me preferring novels and scenarios that could actually happen in real life, so cycles of memory loss seem a bit far-fetched for me and I found it more difficult to connect with the storyline.

I did like the main characters very much and felt their emotion was raw and that their connection was very real, and for that I commend Hoover and Fisher for their excellent description.

This would be a good book for someone to pick up perhaps after Verity, Hoover’s most famous thriller, but before her romance books, as it seems to blend the two genres together nicely.

Never Never by Colleen Hoover: Ending WITH SPOILERS

THERE ARE SPOILERS IN THIS SECTION.

Part 3 of Never Never by Colleen Hoover and Tarryn Fisher concludes with Silas and Charlie realizing that the common factor that causes them to lose their memories is not loving the other person.

The two were not on the best of terms recently in the wake of Charlie’s father going to prison for embezzlement and Silas’s father not wanting the two teens to see one another anymore, blaming Charlie for hiding important documents in the court case to convict her father. The couple fell out of love and began to show the worst sides of themselves.

As they study their old letters to one another and journal entries, they re-discover their pure love for one another and how powerful it was. They realize that who they’ve been recently is not who they truly are or who they want to be. They also realize that Charlie is not at fault for hiding the documents as Silas’s father had previously thought, and that relationship is repaired as well.
