Congratulations on your engagement! Throughout the course of planning my wedding, I learned — to my own surprise — the importance of engagement photos and what you wear for them. In this post, I share not just white dress engagement photos, but also my perspective on why you should get engagement photos and what you should wear. For fun, I also include some of my own engagement photos.
Why You Should Get Engagement Photos
When we started wedding planning, one of our biggest goals was having a beautiful, traditional wedding while also saving as much money as possible on our wedding. The costs are jaw-dropping!
I considered eliminating engagement photos as a way to save money, but my photographer convinced me otherwise. She stated the engagement photos were part of our package, and we would not save any money by not doing them, and that the engagement session is how she gets to know the couple ahead of time. I knew she was right, and that her artistic work on the day of our wedding would likely be better if we actually knew each other ahead of time.
I also realized that the engagement photos were an opportunity for us to get comfortable in front of a camera and to figure out if we were doing anything unknowingly that ended up looking awkward or weird in the photos. I quickly learned how much I was tensing up in photos and learned to relax! My husband also learned through the engagement session how to be himself and smile more naturally on camera.
Additionally, while I had total confidence in my photographer, I know others who ended up unhappy with their wedding photos and utilized their engagement photos in their home as opposed to their wedding photos. The engagement session is just another opportunity to get nice photographs of yourselves that you may end up really valuing in the future. Weddings are already stressful enough, and it helps to minimize any potential source of more stress.
Why You Should Wear a White Dress for your Engagement Photos
I personally believe you should wear a white dress for your engagement photos. Hear me out as a gal with classic/traditional/preppy style …
- With a white dress, especially a simple one, you are less likely to look back and ask yourself, “What was I thinking?”
- A white dress just looks bridal, and your wedding is the only major event in your adult life where you can go all out with white
- If you end up not liking your wedding photographs, you will still have professional photographs of yourself in a white dress
- Engagement photos can be scheduled and rescheduled to occur outside on a nice day, whereas you may not be able to get outdoor photos of yourself looking bridal
Have I convinced you yet?! Hey, I will never begrudge any lady for following her heart and feeling like herself on her engagement photos, even if it means wearing something bright and trendy or totally unconventional, but I wanted to give you a few good points to think about.
And if you are into this kind of style, check out my classic and traditional wedding ideas.
The White Dress I Wore for Our Engagement Photos
Based on the above, I knew I wanted to wear a white dress for our engagement photos. I had a $100 gift card to Macy’s and I used it towards buying this simple DKNY dress, navy Bandolino heels, and sapphire and diamond imitation Badgley Mischka earrings.
I love the idea of wearing navy (or another shade of blue) shoes as part of your white dress engagement photos because it’s classic and it’s “something blue.” How fun is that?!
Below are some of my favorite photos from our engagement photoshoot. We took them in our Philadelphia neighborhood, simply because the easiest way to convince my husband to do them was to say he just had to walk out of the house one day after work. 😉
