Get the 33 best The Hate U Give quotes by Angie Thomas (from the book, not the movie) here to transport you back to the #BlackLivesMatter coming of age story of protagonist Starr Carter and her family.

The Hate U Give remains one of my favorite modern books, and Starr remains one of my favorite characters. I'm not alone. Check out these accolades:

8 starred reviews · Goodreads Choice Awards Best of the Best  ·  William C. Morris Award Winner · National Book Award Longlist · Printz Honor Book · Coretta Scott King Honor Book · #1 New York Times Bestseller!

If you are unfamiliar with the story, The Hate U Give is the most immersive young adult book, with the most well-drawn characters. It's about a teenager named Starr coping with witnessing the death of her friend, Khalil, at the hands of a police officer, all while living in a Black community and going to high school in a white one. Additionally, she must balance the advice of her mother, who is often the voice of reason, and her father, who is a Black Panther.

The Hate U Give tackles politically-charged issues of race, class, and police brutality, but it never feels preachy. Rather, it allows the reader to walk a mile in Starr's shoes as she copes with really big life issues at a young age.

What is the message of The Hate U Give?

The message of The Hate U Give is to embrace who you are and to speak up as to the things that matter to you. For the protagonist Starr, this meant embracing her Blackness and speaking up for the #BlackLivesMatter movement, after witnessing her friend get killed by a police officer who mistakenly believed his hairbrush to be a gun.

While reading The Hate U Give, I felt like I was actually "in" this novel rather than just reading it, and that's a testament to author Angie Thomas and her most thoughtful, memorable quotes from The Hate U Give below.
