Because in March we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day,

Because in March we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, I selected five books from Irish settings / authors from the Rory Gilmore book list for our challenge this month. I already purchased Pygmalion myself, which is nice and short, and the story of My Fair Lady! I can't wait to pair it with a beloved Audrey Hepburn classic. Tip: I buy older books like this used from Thriftbooks, generally for around $4. I usually get about 3 books for about $12 and free shipping. I've also heard some readers say they were going to choose Dracula this month. And if you want to read something very Irish that's not on the Rory Gilmore book list, my top recommendation is the beloved The Heart's Invisible Furies, which in many ways is the story of modern Ireland told through the eyes of very unforgettable characters. What Irish books are you reading this month?

I read 12 books this month (May finish up one more today too) and my favorite was the short and sweet Driving Miss Daisy for #therorygilmorebookclub which I picked up the other day on a whim. It’s free for Audible members, and read by both Angela Lansbury and James Earl Jones. And it’s only an hour long! It was an incredible listening experience akin to live theatre, which I miss so much. And it’s a beautiful story of an unlikely decades long friendship amidst racial tensions. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ plus a ❤️

February’s theme for #therorygilmorebookclub was

February’s theme for #therorygilmorebookclub was an African American history month book. I and many others chose Beloved. Secret Life of Bees was also a popular choice, and I snuck in the one hour audiobook for Driving Miss Daisy as well. Beloved was a REALLY difficult read and it took me a long time to read, but it was worth it. I’m a very logical person and Morrison’s writing is less literal and more poetic so it was tough for me to read. It was inspired by a news story she read about a woman who killed her child rather than have the child returned to slavery. In Beloved, Sethe has escaped slavery but remains haunted by it and the death of her child. This influences a lot of what happens in her life over the course of the novel, especially as a young girl named Beloved unexpectedly enters her life. Next month, we will be doing Irish reads, and I have already purchased Pygmalion, which is nice and short, and the story of My Fair Lady! What African American themed books did you read this month?

It's the birthday of #JohnSteinbeck today, and he is *probably* my favorite classic author, so I wanted to share #EastofEden, one of my all-time favorite books today and a former @oprahsbookclub selection. East of Eden was assigned summer reading in high school and I didn't pick it up until a week before classes, then simply couldn't put it down. I carried this 600+ page epic saga everywhere with me that week and its themes of good versus evil have stayed with me to this day.

It follows the intertwined destinies of two families—the Trasks and the Hamiltons—whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel. Steinbeck called it "the first book."

This quote has always struck me: “I believe that there is one story in the world, and only one. . . . Humans are caught—in their lives, in their thoughts, in their hungers and ambitions, in their avarice and cruelty, and in their kindness and generosity too—in a net of good and evil. . . . There is no other story. A man, after he has brushed off the dust and chips of his life, will have left only the hard, clean questions: Was it good or was it evil? Have I done well—or ill?”

Are you a fan of Steinbeck? I also recommend Of Mice and Men and The Pearl, but have not yet read the classic Grapes of Wrath yet. Who are your favorite classic authors?
