This is an all-inclusive J.Crew capsule wardrobe for WINTER! It’s filled with bestsellers and must-haves for a classic and timeless preppy closet that will take you from this year through the next several years.
When I think of a J.Crew capsule wardrobe, I don’t think of a set group of items you buy together and then mix and match in a very minimalist wardrobe. I just think of seasonal staples — things that go with what you already have and things that will stay in style for years to come for those with preppy leanings. So, that’s the intent behind how I share these pieces.
I first came up with the idea for this J. Crew capsule wardrobe post when I analyzed my website data and realized readers were finding my blog with that search term. It made sense — it’s where I have bought most of my clothes since high school and what I share most often in my style posts.
This is a post I intend to update seasonally, so bookmark it and check back for new picks!
J.Crew Capsule Wardrobe for Winter
It’s now time for your closet to meet WINTER, which I actually love because it offers clean, simple, and functional looks after a very festive holiday season.
My J.Crew capsule wardrobe choices for WINTER are focused on only those items I think you may REALLY need to get you through the next few months, as well as WINTERS in the future.
Below are my top picks: first, some thoughts on each of them, and then images for you to shop.
Let’s go from head to toe!
First, this tortoise headband is a classic accessory I keep in my own closet for a feminine, polished look. It goes with everything, and it doesn’t hurt my head.
Striped tops are great for cold weather layering, and this “print” never goes out of style. I’ve got two great options: a striped boatneck top and a striped long-sleeve pocket top. Both are on my wish list because you can never have too many stripes OR layering pieces. (I size up)
Speaking of layers, the popular tissue turtleneck is a staple for that very traditionally preppy look.
For a more structured layer, this gingham button down is a classic style with a classic print. Every classic closet needs one for all year round.
Since it’s Winter, you’ll want to add some cozy sweaters over these layers. I selected this cable knit sweater both because it’s classic and it’s cotton (not itchy!) It’s VERY New England.
Roll neck sweaters have always been a J.Crew staple since the 1980s, and I love how this roll neck sweater has a relaxed fit and can be dressed up with jeans or down with joggers. If I buy only one new item from this list, this will be it.
You can never go wrong with J.Crew’s cashmere crewneck sweaters. I have several and they offer great quality and a great price, along with a simple silhouette. (true to size)
If you want a more unique cashmere style though, check out this collared v-neck sweater, which maintains a preppy look.
Additionally, everyone needs a great cashmere wrap in their wardrobe for a variety of uses and occasions.
I recently searched high and low for a classic sheath dress like this one. They are hard to find in the days of working from home, so if you need one, grab it, and style it for every season, every year.
I love my teddy vest so much and wear it all the time year after year when it’s not too cold out but I want to feel warm and cozy. (runs slightly large)
If you need a heavier overcoat, the city coat is my absolute favorite jacket of all time, which I have worn for a decade now and ALWAYS get compliments on. It goes with everything, looks good with everything, and is comfortable. (runs slightly large) Prefer a hood? Try this similar chateau parka.
I recently added these New Balance sneakers to my closet, and I think it was a great investment. Everyone needs a nice, casual, neutral sneaker that goes with everything. (I sized up 1/2 size)
Every year, J.Crew’s Nordic boots are such a huge hit. I always debate getting them for a very snow-inspired look.
Lastly, ballet flats are as classic a shoe as I can think of, and they can be worn year round. I recently added these to my closet, and I have zero regrets. (I sized up 1/2 size)
