Overall, the True Summer color palette is cool and muted, with very gentle and relaxing tones reminiscent of nature’s greens and blues on a cloudy, rainy Summer day. It reminds me of the island of Nantucket, a/k/a “The Grey Lady.”
But before we dive into the True Summer color palette, let’s discuss the Color Season analysis as a whole. I first became interested in researching the Color Season analysis as part of my process to come up with my own unique capsule wardrobe.
You can learn more about how to create your own unique capsule wardrobe (as I did) with the book The Curated Closet.
If you aren’t familiar with the Color Season analysis, it’s a curated selection of colors that pair well with your natural features (i.e., skin tone, hair color, eye color). It’s first categorized by the four seasons (Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter) and then by three subcategories within each season (for 12 total categories).
Once you know your season and your subcategory, you can begin to learn what colors work best for you, from makeup to clothes, and more. Trust me, it’s life-changing.
While I am not personally in the True Summer color palette, I love the process of learning about color so much, that I just had to research and share this with you to help you determine if you are in the True Summer color palette and, if so, what colors suit you best.
Quick Reference Guide for the True Summer Color Palette
No. These two color seasons sit next to each other in the color season analysis chart, but True Summer colors are a bit brighter, more cool-toned, and lighter. Soft Summer colors are less saturated.
As mentioned, the True Summer color palette is cool, muted, and grey toned.
A True Summer’s personal features and best colors will blend more than they contrast each other.
Eyes are blue, grey, green, light grey hazel, or greyish brown. A True Summer’s skin tone is cool, with blue or beige undertones. Hair can range from varying shades of blonde to brown, but it will always appear grey and ashy with no warm tones.
Beautiful examples of True Summers include Olivia Wilde and Emily Blunt. In my opinion, Olivia Wilde consistently nails the True Summer color palette. The muted greys, pinks, and purples she wears make her ashy grey-toned skin, hair, and eyes just POP.
True Summer Makeup and Lipstick
True Summer makeup should be very gentle, medium pink, and cool-toned like those Nantucket greys, browns, and blues.
Let’s get specific. Since a True Summer’s skin tone has NO warmth, bronzer should be avoided. Instead, use a cool, muted pink blush.
Mascara and eyeliner should have grey tones in colors like grey, brown, and blue. Again, black is too dark and harsh.
As for lipstick, again, really cool and muted pinks and mauves work best.
And for eyeshadows, a nice matte grey palette is the easiest solution, but also feel free to dive into other muted grey tones, like slate blue.
Below are a few great makeup and lipstick options for a True Summer:
- Lipstick shade: “Weho”
- Blush shade: “Dollface”
- Eyeshadow palette shades: “Greys” (popular with readers)
- Eyeliner shade: “Smoke”
- Eyeshadow shade: “Cool Taupe Matte”
