So, in a fast-moving world, what’s in it for you?

My Reading Journey

I was a bookworm from the beginning.  I started reading around age 4, when I handed my mom a mini book and said, “I think I just read this to myself” and then proceeded to read the short, simple sentences to her. I still remember the feeling of being so enthralled when she told me I had read it correctly. Afterward, my favorite television show was Reading Rainbow.  I loaned each book mentioned from the library.  I later grew into The Baby-Sitters Club books (now available on Audible!) and could read them faster than my mom could buy them.  (Remember them?!)

I was interested in the outdoors and crafts, but books — that was my thing. Especially in a non-digital age, a good book felt like an escape into another world and an opening of my mind to people, places and things I may never know otherwise.  I liked reading and writing so much that I just knew, by around age 12, that I would become a lawyer one day.  I also hoped to write a book from a young age, but that dream has yet to come to fruition (although I am writing via this blog!).

As an adult, reading books daily has become a similar escape and expansion of knowledge that I so greatly value.  A good Audible book gets me through rush-hour commutes and housecleaning, and a well-written book keeps me from watching bad reality tv or mindlessly scrolling Instagram (and, by the way, these are great ways to “squeeze in” time for reading books).

Getting lost in a story helps me to wind down and forget my own problems.  And sitting in peace is, well, peaceful.  The more I know, the more informed my actions are, and I have noticed myself making better decisions.  For that, I am grateful.

My favorite part about this article was when you mentioned that getting lost in a story can help you forget your own problem and wind down, and I think this is really important for any adult. I would recommend anyone that is having a hard time spending a couple of hours a week reading interesting books, so you can find a way to relax. Recently I have decided that I would like to read mystery novels, so I will need to start looking for those soon.
